GEORGETOWN BREAKS OUT! ENGAGING LEARNING EXPERIENCES WITH BREAKOUTEDU BY MEGAN FULLER
WHAT IS A BREAKOUT? BreakoutEDU is a kit that includes multiple resettable locks, boxes, and items to be used to play the game. The goal is to breakout out of (or technically break into) the box. The Breakout game can be used at any grade level and any subject. When students are engaged in the Breakout games they are utilizing the 4 Cs: Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Creativity, and Communication. A key component to the Breakouts is the opportunity to learn from failure. Taking that failure and developing strategies and skills to move forward. To promote a growth mindset. HOW HAVE WE USED THE BREAKOUT KITS AT GEORGETOWN SCHOOL? Multiple grades have used the kits including 1st grade through 6th grade. Some of the Breakout games we have played have been focused on literacy, math, digital citizenship, information literacy skills, problem solving, and team building. We are looking forward to many more Breakout experiences!
WHAT DO THE STUDENTS THINK? We had to persevere when it got challenging. ~ Connor It's fun and difficult. ~ Anna It was fun but also hard. ~ Brett You're learning while you're trying to figure out the locks. ~ Freyja The first one was challenging. The next one was harder. ~ Miles I love them! ~ Laura You get to figure it out with help and teamwork and it's really fun for the mystery. ~ Liz The best thing ever! ~ Maisie We get to figure out how to unlock the locks and use teamwork to figure it out. ~ Waylon
THANK YOU GIEF! These amazing learning experiences would not be possible without the generous grant from the Georgetown Island Education Foundation (GIEF). Thank you for making this happen for our Georgetown students!
